Help please!

Beitragvon peterj » Mo Apr 14, 2008 22:52

Hi,
I just registered here to see if I can get an answer to my questions.
I´m looking for someone that knows the reptiles in Bosnia/Herzegovina.

The reason is that my sister in law, that is married to a guy from Croatia, went for a holiday and she came across a lot of snakes in the wild. We have been discussing what it might be, and I would like to have help with that.

Anyone that feels they could help me, please send me a pm here, so I can explain where they have been.

Regards
Peter

Snakes in Croatia

Beitragvon Max Pöchhacker » Di Apr 15, 2008 6:39

Hi

Best would be if we could see some pics of the snakes that exite you.

Next helpful thing we liked to have is information about the exact location where you found them.
Best would be GPS-Coordinates.

Having this information some of us can surely help you.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I dont have any pictures or GPS coordinates. However, I do know where they were. They stayed in the area between Medugorje and Gradac. She claims she saw many different types of snakes. I hope this helps you to help me! :)

Hi,

it is nearly impossible to tell you, which kinds of species may occur there!

I´ve checked the area
Bild

Here is a list, what may occure there:

Grass snake - Natrix natrix persa
Tessellated or Dice snake - Natrix tessellata
Balkan Whip Snake - Hierophis gemonensis
Four lined snake - Elaphe quatuorlineata
Aesculapian snake - Zamenis longissimus
Austrian snake - Coronella austriaca
venomous:
Longnose viper, Poskok - Vipera ammodytes
maybe:
Cat snake - Telescopus fallax
Leopard snake - Zamenis situla
Whip snake - Platyceps najadum
and this -> NO snake, a legless lizard:
Pseudopus apodus (lage, up to 1.3 meters, brown)

Hope this helps

Thankyou Mario. I will look in to pics of the animals and see if that can be correct. They were talking about meadow vipers, but then that is probably wrong.

Meadow vipers (Vipera ursinii macrops) are occuring in the Dinara and coastal mountains in Croatia at altitudes of at least 1.400 meters (or a bit less). So I think no ursinii there !?
