Here's what I learned about it.
Some people supposed that Lissotriton and Mesotriton (as well as Ommatotriton for vittatus) were all nomina nuda. In fact, they are not, and only Lophinus (introduced by Litvinchuk instead of Lissotriton) is a nomen nudum. Given the obvious and strongly established paraphyly of the old genus Triturus s.l., this split is certainly desirable (in contrast to some other, more subjective splits of the last couple of years). Furthermore, the names appear to be valid => Lissotriton and Mesotriton are OK to be used.
This has been established with help of a.o. Darrel Frost (Amphibians Species of the World database).

I have submitted a paper dealing with this and other taxonomy and nomenclature issues. Just hold on. g's, J.

Hi,
a friend of mine (I hope he's going to answer by himself) told me that Frost is wrong in this case. I can't provide any reference as far as I don't have the time / "don't want" to delve into this topic.
Hi,

Still, I stick with my opinion, because the matter was re-investigated with the original antique papers a very short time ago. g's, J.

As mentioned on the start page, I chose to use the borders as defined in the first Arnold's field guide. In practice, it comes down to Europe without former Sovjet states. Might include them later on; there's no real valid reason for this and the Ural mnts may be a biogeographically more valid frontier (cf. borders of Western Palearctic zoogeographical zone - but that includes parts of N Africa too, if I'm correct).
